Professor Mark Howden will step down as Director of the ANU Institute for Climate, Energy & Disaster Solutions (ICEDS) on 25 March, concluding a decade of distinguished leadership at ICEDS and previously at the ANU Climate Change Institute.

A globally recognised climate scientist, Professor Howden has shaped national and international climate policy through his work with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), where he serves as Vice Chair of Working Group II.

His research has influenced greenhouse gas inventories under the Paris Agreement and informed pathways for emissions reduction. A key contributor to multiple IPCC Assessment Reports since 1991, he also played a role in the body's 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

With more than 440 publications, his work on climate adaptation, risk assessment and policy solutions has guided decision-makers at every level. Under his leadership, ICEDS has secured over $15.6 million in grants, educational programs and consultancy agreements since 2021.

Beyond global climate policy, Professor Howden has significantly advanced climate engagement and research collaboration at ANU. When he joined the Climate Change Institute in 2015, it had around 150 researchers; today, ICEDS has more than 600, spanning climate, energy and disaster solutions. His leadership has bolstered the University's influence in tackling climate change, fostering collaboration across disciplines and increasing ANU capacity to inform, engage and drive meaningful change.

He was also instrumental in strengthening the University's climate commitments, playing a pivotal role in establishing ANU Below Zero in 2020. This program embedded climate action into University operations, integrating research with sustainability initiatives. His influence helped cement it within the Campus Environment Division, ensuring ANU leads by example in emissions reduction, climate adaptation and community engagement.

A passionate communicator, Professor Howden engages effortlessly across political, professional and generational divides. Whether briefing government leaders, advising industry or speaking to rural high school students, he delivers clear, solutions-focused insights. His commitment to being an "honest broker" of climate science by being grounded in evidence, inclusivity and respect has made him a trusted voice in an increasingly polarised landscape. His ability to explain the urgency of climate action while focusing on practical solutions has been crucial in sustaining momentum.

While Mark will be missed at ICEDS, the Institute remains in a strong position to promote ANU expertise, research and solutions for the betterment of society. Looking ahead, he enters a new era in his academic career, focusing on driving positive global climate outcomes through research, engagement and his roles in national and international advisory bodies.
