Twelve academics from the Australian National University (ANU) have been named in the top one per cent in the world in their fields on Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers 2024 list.

A Highly Cited Researcher is an individual who has demonstrated significant and broad influence in their fields of research.

This small fraction of the researcher population contributes disproportionately to extending the frontiers of knowledge and contributing to innovations that make the world healthier, more sustainable and drive societal impact.

Professor Lachlan Blackhall, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), congratulated the ANU academics on this year’s list, acknowledging their wide-ranging influence and impact across their fields.

“It’s a tremendous accomplishment to be ranked among the top one per cent of researchers globally, and a reflection of the distinctive, world-leading research that defines the ANU. My warmest congratulations to all on this well-deserved recognition.

I’d also like to congratulate the researchers who have been recognised on this list for several years, and also the accomplishments of Dr Kirill Koshelev, an early career researcher on this year’s list – a significant achievement and testament to his potential, he says.

David Pendlebury, Head of Research Analysis at the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate says the Highly Cited Researchers list identifies and celebrates exceptional individual researchers at the ANU, whose significant and broad influence in their fields translates to impact in their research community.

“Their pioneering innovations contribute to a healthier, more sustainable and secure world,” he says.

These researchers’ achievements strengthen the foundation of excellence and innovation that drives societal progress.”

The ANU researchers on this year’s list are:

  • Professor Albert van Dijk, ANU College of Science, Fenner School of Environment & Society. Professor van Dijk established and leads the Centre for Water and Landscape Dynamics. He has a passion for practical, often spatial research applications, including the observation and forecasting of natural hazards, water resources, environmental condition and agricultural production.
  • Professor Paul Fitzgerald, ANU College of Health and Medicine, Director of the School of Medicine and Psychology. His research interests include novel treatments for mental health conditions including depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, PTSD, schizophrenia, developmental and cognitive disorders.
  • Professor Yuri Kivshar, ANU College of Science, Research School of Physics. His research interests include nonlinear physics, metamaterials and nanophotonics.
  • Dr Kirill Koshelev, ANU College of Science, Research School of Physics and Postdoctoral Fellow at UNSW Canberra. Dr Koshelev is an early-career researcher working on the theoretical and numerical models for a broad range of cross-field applications of optics and photonics, from nonlinear optics to laser generation.
  • Professor Si Ming Man, ANU College of Health and Medicine, The John Curtin School of Medical Research. He is an immunologist internationally recognised for his research on the role of inflammation in infectious disease and cancer.
  • Associate Professor Bui Quang Minh, ANU College of Engineering, Computing and Cybernetics, School of Computing. He is an expert in the bioinformatic method development for phylogenomics and molecular evolution.
  • Professor Dragomir Neshev, ANU College of Science, Research School of Physics, Professor in Physics and the Director of the Australian Research Council. His research spans several branches of optics, including periodic photonic structures, singular optics, plasmonics and optical metasurfaces.
  • Emeritus Professor Will Steffen, who passed away in January 2023, was one of Australia’s most influential and respected climate scientists. He leaves behind a strong legacy at ANU, as the former Director of the Fenner School of Environment and Society and the inaugural Director of the University’s Climate Change Institute.
  • Professor Danielle Way, ANU College of Science, Research School of Biology. Professor Way is a world leader on the impact of rising temperatures and CO2 concentrations on plants, with a focus on photosynthesis, respiration, water fluxes and growth.
  • Professor Zongyou Yin, ANU College of Science, Research School of Chemistry. His research is interdisciplinary, encompassing AI-driven materials innovations, nano-to-atomic materials science, fundamental relationship among materials-structures-devices, and synergistic integration of multi-functions towards systems for energy conversion and storage, body-wearables and (opto)electronics.

Secondary affiliation:

  • Professor Michael Johnston, University of Oxford, ANU College of Science Research School of Physics. His research focuses on semiconductor physics, photovoltaics and terahertz photonics.
  • Professor Yong-Ling Ruan, Northwest A&F University – China, ANU College of Science Research School of Biology. His work focuses on discovering genes and mechanisms that control resource and energy allocation between and within plant cells and organs for improving growth, yield, resilience and biodiversity.
