A new institute has been launched at The Australian National University (ANU) to provide a coordinated approach to Defence engagement.  

The ANU Defence Institute will facilitate a closer working relationship between researchers and educators at the University and Defence, allowing organisations to tap into expert knowledge across a range of disciplines at the ANU.  

The Institute will also play a role in coordinating training and education of Defence staff and manage the University’s strategic relationships across Defence and Defence Industries. 

Professor Ute Roessner, ANU Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research Initiatives and Infrastructure, says that ANU has a clear responsibility to conduct research that supports our national priorities.

“The Institute will leverage our quality in research and education and what sets the ANU apart – our capacity to deliver across policy, governance and HASS disciplines, as well as science and technology-based research,” she says.

Professor Lachlan Blackhall, ANU Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) says that the trusted research undertaken at ANU shapes the geopolitical strategic environment in Australia and protects our national interests.

Some of the Institute’s key activities will include: 

• Developing a network of Defence-relevant researchers that can share opportunities and coordinate delivery of development activities to upskill researchers working with Defence and relevant Industries. 
• Fostering an environment for effective collaborative research, bringing together multidisciplinary research groups to address pressing Defence challenges and develop fit-for-purpose solutions.  
• Leveraging the University’s extensive experience in delivering targeted short courses and specialised programs for Defence staff to enhance technical competencies and foster strategic thinking and leadership skills. 
• Enable systematic ANU engagement with Defence (and Defence Industry) through clear external points of contact and co-creation of research and education priorities for the short, medium and long-term.
