Getting started

Congratulations on your candidature as a higher degree by research (HDR) student, and welcome to ANU! Starting a research degree can be a confusing time, especially if you are new to ANU.

Start by getting in touch with your local HDR Administrator and Convenor. They will be able to guide you through the induction process and help you find your marks.

Arrange an informal meeting or coffee with your supervisor. Your first meeting can just be a casual conversation, but you should also try to schedule another meeting to establish your expectations of each other in the supervision relationship.

Planning your candidature

Familiarise yourself with your program milestones and requirements (e.g., Induction, compulsory coursework, Research Integrity Training).

There are a number of areas around the ANU dedicated to helping students through a variety of issues. Managing your candidature

As an ANU HDR candidate, you are responsible for the management of your program. There are various aspects that require consideration during your time with us. Candidates are required to meet satisfactory academic progress through the completion of a number of progress milestones.

There are also rules and guidelines that govern your responsibilities and requirements as a candidate. Candidates have the ultimate responsibility for their candidature, but ANU has responsibility for supporting them throughout their time with the University.

Fieldwork, Conferences & research travel

There are multiple research activities you may pursue throughout your candidature such as fieldwork, research visits at other institutions and participation in research conferences.

Fieldwork is considered part of your candidature. You remain enrolled during the absence from campus. All HDR candidates must complete the appropriate training before commencing fieldwork.

Attendance at national and international conferences is a common part of research training for ANU candidates, providing an opportunity to present research and discuss it with others in the discipline.
